Bayern Munich 0-2 Inter Milan

                                                                          Milito 35, 70

Two fine strikes from Argentine frontman Diego Milito gave Inter Milan their third European champions club title, their first in forty-five years, in Madrid’s Bernabeu Stadium.

But even Milito was over-shadowed by Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho, who fashioned his second Champions League triumph, having steered Porto to victory in 2004; his “Italian” side containing no Italians, with many receiving the famous trophy wearing the flags of their various nations.

Both sides were domestic double winners and produced an absorbing final.

The match soon took the predicted pattern, Bayern Munich dominating possession and Inter looking incisive on the break.

One such break gave Inter a 35th minute lead, Milito and Wesley Sneijder combining well from a long kick by keeper Julio Cesar for Milito to dink a classy right-foot finish beyond Bayern keeper Hans-Jorg Butt.

Sneijder shot weakly at Butt after another Inter breakaway moments before the interval.

But Bayern wasted a glorious chance to equalise straight after half-time, Thomas Mueller striking Julio Cesar’s legs from the same position where Milito had earlier scored.

Butt saved well from Goran Pandev moments later. And Milito sealed victory on 70 minutes, turning Bayern centre-back Mark Van Buyten inside-out before placing his right-foot shot past Butt.
