Barcelona 2-0 Rangers

Barcelona took one step closer to clinching qualification to the knockout stages with an efficient performance in the 2-0 victory over Rangers in their UEFA Champions League clash on Wednesday.

Thierry Henry continued his good form in front of the goal with a simple finish early in the game while Lionel Messi added the second two minutes before half time to set Barca on course for a comfortable victory.

Rangers had held Barca to a 0-0 draw at Ibrox Stadium a fortnight ago and Barca came out all guns blazing, determined not to let the visitors apply the same tactic once again.

And they were rewarded with a goal in the 6th minute when some great play by Ronaldinho saw him create space on the left wing and the Brazilian crossed the ball to Messi in the penalty box. Though keeper Allan McGregor was clearly beaten by the header, the ball rebounded off the far post and fell straight to Henry who made no mistake in slotting home his 44th Champions League goal.

The hosts looked dangerous in their attacks and were more likely to score the second goal as Andres Iniesta came very close to doubling the lead with a shot that flew just inches wide of the target. Ronaldinho was looking dangerous as before and could have doubled the lead but his shot was saved brilliantly by McGregor.

However the Brazilian superstar played a vital part in Barca's second goal as he went on a great run and played a great one-two with Messi but though his shot was saved by McGregor, Messi pounced on the rebound to double the lead.

Barca continued to press forward in the second half as Xavi Hernández, Messi and Ronaldinho all had shots on target but were unable to beat McGregor. But with Rangers not able to chalk up any meaningful chances, Barca played out the final few minutes to shut out the visitors and claim the victory.
