Austria 1-1 Poland

An injury time penalty from veteran Ivica Vastic kept Austrian hopes alive at Euro 2008 as they drew 1-1 with Poland in their second Group B game in Vienna. Austria now have one point from two games, and take on Germany in their final group game, while the Poles take on already qualified Croatia.

Austria bombarded Poland in the first few minutes, but failed to score due to a combination of poor finishing from their forwards and brilliant keeping from Artur Boruc. Young Werder Bremen forward Martin Harnik had two fine chances in one on one positions, but could not find a way past Boruc. The same went for Christoph Leitgeb, and Austria were made to rue what could have been, when Roger gave Poland the lead in the 30th minute, tapping in Marek Saganowski's cross from close range. The ball did take a deflection off two Austrian players after the cross had arrived in the box, but the Brazilian born forward was clearly offside when Saganowski played the ball in.

At half time Beenhakker took off Mariusz Jop, who seemed to be having a bad day and brought on Golanski. Within minutes, Austria appealed for a penalty when Ivanschitz went down in the box, but Howard Webb waved away the appeal. Jacek Krzynowek's powerful free kick from 35 yards was stopped by Jurgen Macho. But conceding the goal seemed to have deflated Austria, and Poland, by and far, created more chances in the second half, with Roger at the centre of it. The visiting Poles showed their appreciation for his efforts when he was replaced by Murawski.

But there was still drama to come. With seconds ticking away, Austria earned a freekick but were forced to retake it by Webb. But as the second one was being taken, Mariusz Lewandowski appeared to pull Sebastian Proedl's shirt, and Webb promptly pointed to the spot. Proedl was earlier booked by Webb, and misses the game against Germany. The Poles were furious, and as Vastic became the oldest scorer in the history of the European Championship with his spot kick, knew that their tournament was all but over.
