Aston Villa 2-0 ChelseaAston Villa pulled off a remarkable performance to hand Chelsea their first defeat of the season in their Premiership clash on Sunday.
Zat Knight scored on his debut while Gabriel Agbonlahor added the second two minutes before full time to calm Villans nerves. The loss was compounded by the inability of Chelsea attackers to create any kind of chances in the second half as Aston Villa defenders chalked out a determined performance to keep Chelsea attackers at bay.
Chelsea dominated the proceedings early on but it was Villa who created the first chance of the match when Agbonlahor struck a firm shot towards the net only to be denied by some great keeping by Petr Cech. Michael Essien, Florent Malouda and John Terry all had chances to put Chelsea in the lead but were unable to hit the target.
Martin Laursen and Knight performed brilliantly to keep Didier Drogba quiet but the Ivorian striker managed to create an opening when he held off the challenge from Laursen only to shoot wide from the edge of the area. Villa could have taken the lead when Young found Gareth Barry in the box, but the 27-year old's overhead kick was blocked by Luke Moore.
Sensing blood, Villa came out attacking in the second half as Cech had to be alert to deny Young but it was all in vain as the hosts managed to take the lead in the 47th minute when Knight climbed high to head home Barry's corner.
Mourinho made three substitutions in a space of 10 minutes, bringing on Claudio Pizarro, Joe Cole and Kalou to replace Obi Mikel, Wright-Phillips and Makelele. However Chelsea failed to create any chances in the half even though Villa spent most of the second half defending.
With just two minutes to go, Villa went on a swift counter attack as Young raced on the left flank and crossed into the box which was turned in brilliantly by Agbonlahor to give all three points for Villa. Tags: Aston Villa, Chelsea, Premiership, John Terry, Didier Drogba, Joe Cole Posted: |
