Arsenal 1-1 Leeds United Fabregas (pen) 90 Snodgrass (pen) 54
A tale of two penalties as Arsenal kept manager Arsene Wenger’s unbeaten FA Cup third round record by a matter of minutes against Championship outfit Leeds. The visitors led after Robert Snodgrass’s 54th-minute penalty and weathered a considerable Arsenal storm, especially after the 59th-minute introduction of Cesc Fabregas. But Arsenal were also awarded a penalty in a frenetic climax. And after Fabregas dispatched his spot-kick, Arsenal had chances to seal a dramatic victory, but were denied by poor finishing and a fine save by Leeds keeper Kasper Schmeichel. The Gunners’ Andrei Arshavin missed a glorious one-on-one opportunity on 11 minutes. And the Leeds goal led a charmed life around the half-hour mark, with Denilson and Marouane Chamakh denied by goalline clearances and a fine save by Schmeichel. Leeds went ahead against the run of play when Max Gradel was upended in the box by Denilson and Snodgrass converted. Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny saved Luciano Becchio’s 64th minute header. But it was one-way traffic after that. Referee Phil Dowd awarded Arsenal an 88th-minute penalty but the decision was superseded by an offside flag. However, a minute later, substitute Theo Walcott was dragged back in the box, and Fabregas did the honours. Tags: Arsenal, FA Cup, Leeds, Cesc Fabregas, Wojciech Szczesny Posted: |
