Arsenal 0-0 Blackburn
Arsenal dropped two possibly pivotal points in their attempt to overhaul Manchester United at the top of the EPL, when struggling Blackburn Rovers stubbornly kept a clean sheet, despite being down to ten men for the final 15 minutes.
The Gunners typically dominated possession but produced only snatches of their usual free-flowing football and were wasteful in front of goal, while Rovers had chances themselves to cause an even bigger upset.
Rovers keeper Paul Robinson made a good early save from Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere passed up Arsenal’s best first-half opportunity, firing Samir Nasri’s cutback from the right wide from only eight yards.
Jermaine Jones and Steven Nzonzi were both nearly gifted goals by jittery Gunners keeper Manuel Almunia before half-time.
And Robinson made comfortable second half saves from Laurent Koscielny and Robin Van Persie as Arsenal continued to huff and puff to inadequate effect.
On 76 minutes, Nzonzi saw red for a reckless challenge on Koscielny. But for all Arsenal’s late pressure, they only hit the target once.
Niklas Bendtner and Van Persie both headed over when well-placed and Bendtner’s header on goal in the closing stages was chested off the line by Rovers’ Spanish right-back Michel Salgado.
