Diego Maradona’s Argentina progressed to the quarter-finals thanks to an entertaining win over an unfortunate Mexico side, who were the victims of a controversial offside decision with the game still scoreless.

Carlos Salcido crashed a forty-yard drive against the crossbar and Andres Guardado shaved the post with a left-foot shot moments later before an offside Carlos Tevez gave Argentina the lead from Lionel Messi’s pass.

The Mexicans’ sense of injustice was heightened after the goal was replayed on the stadium’s big screen. And they were stunned further when Gonzalo Higuain made it 2-0 after dispossessing Ricardo Osorio.

Tevez all-but-sealed victory with a stunning 25-yard drive past Mexican keeper Oscar Perez seven minutes after the interval.

But Mexico continued to drive forward, substitute Pablo Barrera having a header cleared off the line by Gabriel Heinze before Javier Hernandez’s deft turn and thumping left-foot shot gave El Tri a deserved consolation goal.
