Aberdeen 0-0 DniproJust over 15 000 fans came to watch live UEFA Cup football at Pittodrie for the first time in 5 years and saw the home team frustrated by a stubborn a Ukrainian defence and a midfield and forward consisting of players who were comfortable on the ball but not as penetrating as Aberdeen.
After a poor start to the season Jimmy Calderwood had made several changes to the team in an attempt to kick start their season and although they mad much the better chances the lack of confidence and luck in front of goal has made their task of qualifying for the group phases of the UEFA Cup harder than before the game.
Aberdeen would have liked to have had a goal or two to take to the Ukraine but at least managed not to allow Dnipro a crucial away goal. Jamie Langfield had returned in goal for the Dons and made several good saves to remind the manage that he still wishes to be part of the plans of the manager as Soutar was given the night off from keeping duties. Whilst up front Jamie Smith had the better game of the forwards, creating several good chances for his strike partner Lee Miller.
Both sides will be happy with the result for different reasons and both will enter the crucial second leg of the tie with their hopes of qualifying still high. For Aberdeen they know that they will need to score at least one goal and would hope with their quality to be able to accomplish that at least. For Dnipro they will have the advantage of home support in their next live football match in the UEFA Cup, which may prove to be a winning combination for them.
