Euro 2008 qualifier abandoned

Saturday’s Euro 2008 qualifier between Denmark and Sweden was abandoned 89 minutes into the match. Denmark were 3-0 down when they made a stunning comeback until they drew level. The scoreline was set at 3-3 before referee Herbert Fandel decided to send off Dane defender Christian Poulsen. The unpopular decision made one fan see red who invaded the pitch with the aim of confronting Fandel. The wayward fan was intercepted by Danish players but Fandel then left the playing field without the resulting penalty being taken.

The game did not complete the full 90 minutes which leaves UEFA to make a ruling on the tie. UEFA will reach a decision once it has reviewed the referee and officials reports from the game. The game could be decided as a 3-0 victory to Sweden as the second half did not complete. The controversial Euro 2008 qualifier Group F game is currently led by Northern Ireland. Herbert Fandel is an experienced referee who was also in charge of last months Champions League final.

Christian Poulsen was shown the red card shortly after seeing red and punching Swedish striker Rosenberg in the stomach inside the Danes penalty area. A penalty kick was awarded after the infringement but was never taken as the match ended in confusion.
