World Cup Not In Diarra’s Blood

France coach Raymond Domenech is waiting until the last minute to trim his World Cup squad to 23 because of continuing injury concerns surrounding centre-back William Gallas.

Domenech, who left high-profile names such as Karim Benzema, Patrick Viera and Samr Nasri out of his original selection of 30, named 24 players this week.

But his preparations were immediately rocked by news that Real Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra has been ruled out.

Diarra was suffering from stomach cramps, thought to be the symptom of a blood cell disorder aggravated by altitude. Domenech confirmed: “He’s not fit to play in the World Cup.”

William Gallas added to his injury woes by crashing a dune buggy during one of the squad’s many alternative sports activities in the camp. He only grazed a hand but, despite racing the buggy, is still struggling with a calf injury.

Uncapped striker Mathieu Valbuena and defender Marc Planus have retained their places. Planus is reportedly in as cover for Gallas but may remain in the final 23 if Diarra is not replaced.

Domenech said: “We have a few days to make that decision.”

Striker Djibril Cisse received his first call-up since being left out of France’s Euro 2008 squad.
