Wolves’ Results Match Performances…At Last

Wolverhampton Wanderers finally got the result that their much-vaunted much-improved recent displays have merited when they came from a goal down to best big-spending Manchester City 2-1 at Molineux last Saturday.

David Edwards’ second-half winner gave manager Mick McCarthy’s men their first EPL win since their opening day home win over Stoke.

And the Wanderers boss kept to the theme of results being better than performances when he said after the game: “That result has been coming for a few weeks.

“When you are bottom, but playing really well, with a great spirit, it sounds really hollow when you say things like that. But this performance and result summed it all up for me.”

Wolves’ recent run of daunting fixtures continues with this Saturday’s visit to Manchester United, although Wolves will take heart from their 3-2 Carling Cup defeat at Old Trafford last week.

And they will also take heart from former owner Sir Jack Hayward, who recently told the BBC that not only was he “confident in Wolves’ survival” but that they could finish as high as tenth.

Arsenal’s forthcoming visit to Molineux was given extra spice by Wolves Chief Executive Jez Moxey, who accused Gunners boss Arsene Wenger of talking “nonsense” on the topical issue of hard tackling in the EPL.

After Wenger defended a recent Jack Wilshere tackle which saw the Arsenal player dismissed, Moxey said Wenger’s comments were: “an absolute nonsense…keep your mouth shut…play the game, play aggressive, let everybody play.”

Arsenal visit Molineux next Wednesday.
