Wilhelmsson out of Euro 2008

Sweden’s winger Christian Wilhelmsson will be out for the rest of the European Championships after he tore his hamstring in Sweden’s 2-0 victory against Greece.

The 28-year old Wilhelmsson lasted 78 minutes in Sweden’s Group G match, but was forced to come off and was immediately strapped up and taken away for various tests. The team doctor stated:

"He's got a torn hamstring and probably won't be able to play again in the tournament."

"Obviously it's a blow to lose him. He was in the starting eleven and is a very good player, but others have been keeping in shape." added Coach Lars Lagerbäck.

Wilhelmsson expects to be out for about six weeks, but Coach Lars Lagerbäck wasn’t giving out any clues on who would be replacing him. Johan Elmander, or possibly Birmingham’s Sebastian Larsson are candidates for the vacant right wing role for the next game against Spain.

Sweden are placed second in Group D, but only on goal difference and an unlikely win against the in-form Spain would all but guarantee qualification to the knockout rounds of the UEFA Euro 2008.
