Relegation side Wigan slumped at the JJB stadium against Middlesbrough and as a result slip into the relegation places of the English Premier League. The only goal of the match was turned in by Mark Viduka after a mishit free kick by Stuart Downing. The Wigan players appealed the mishit but the goal came down to dreadful defending by the home side.

Boro's winner had an element of luck as Stuart Downing's mishit free-kick turned into the perfect pass for Mark Viduka to steer home the winner. Wigan made a bright start to fight for their premiership survival however 5 changes to the side made their play uncoordinated. They now slip into the relegation zone of the English Premier League with results elsewhere going against them.
