Wigan Back Down To Earth

The euphoria of the 3-1 win against Chelsea was quickly dampened following a 2-1 reverse at the KC Stadium in Hull. With the Tigers coming off the back of a 6-1 battering from Liverpool, Latics boss Roberto Martinez could have been forgiven for anticipating his team to build on the famous victory over Carlo Ancelotti’s boys but they left Humberside pointless.

Martinez was disappointed. “You need to be arrogant enough to defend well and we let ourselves down with two lapses and were punished. We created good chances but when you concede cheap goals from set pieces it is difficult and that was the case.”

The Spaniard was happy with the overall team performance though as his team dominated the game for long periods. The lack of quality in the final third cost Wigan dearly at the weekend and he will look for that area to improve as well as defending where it counts. Martinez added "We did impose ourselves on the game and control the rhythm of it but to give the first goal of the game away was key. It's a lesson we need to learn but we are still growing."
