£4.99 for 1 years subscription Well, it’s the end of the season again and that means just one thing – the FA Cup Final. This Saturday we will witness the teams who finished 1st (Manchester United) and 2nd (Chelsea) in the English Premier League go head to head for the final time this season in what should be a compelling match. This will be the first major final played at the new Wembley Stadium as the competition returns to the hallowed turf for the first time since the FA Cup final in 2000 – a final incidentally won by one of this season’s finalists. Chelsea defeated Aston Villa 1-0 thanks to a goal from Roberto Di Matteo. On the bench that day was also a young defender called John Terry, who will this time lead his club out as Chelsea Captain in the showpiece of English football as the club go in search of their fourth FA Cup victory and also a Cup double, having already won the Carling Cup earlier in the season. Manchester United have already won the famous old trophy a staggering eleven times and boss Sir Alex Ferguson will be keen to make that twelve so he can add the trophy to the Premiership title the club wrapped up a few weeks ago. This would mean he would also achieve yet another league and cup double for the Red Devils. With both clubs chasing the illusive double, there will likely be frantic action on the pitch as neither side will be willing to let this trophy go without a fight. Chelsea will go into the match in the middle of an injury crisis. Jon Obi Mikel appears as if he will be the latest player to be ruled out of contention for selection for the FA Cup final. He has recently picked up a hamstring injury, leaving Portuguese boss Jose Mourinho with a squad of just 15 players to choose from. Mourinho will be without £30 million striker Andriy Shevchenko, German International midfielder Michael Ballack, experienced defender Ricardo Carvalho and tricky Dutch winger Arjen Robben. On top of this there are doubts surrounding England left back Ashley Cole, who is struggling for fitness. On the positive side of things though, Chelsea will still be able to call on the likes of Petr Cech, John Terry, Frank Lampard, Michael Essien and Didier Drogba so the starting eleven that Jose Mourinho decides on will still be able to mount a serious challenge against Manchester United. Manchester United go into the match with almost a fully fit squad. Sir Alex Ferguson will be without veteran defender Gary Neville a longer term injury who is not yet fully fit. The experienced right back picked up an ankle injury in the middle of March while playing against Bolton Wanderers, Neville had hoped to be fit to appear in the FA Cup Final however it has been revealed by the club that he has had to have an operation on the niggling injury effectively ruling him out of the weekend’s game. Sir Alex’s only other real concern will be French striker Louis Saha. The Frenchman returned to action in recent weeks only to see a recurrence of a knee injury that had ruled him out earlier in the season. The striker had a scan on his knee on Monday and has been ruled out of contention for the final by the United boss. Saha’s absence will mean a possible opportunity for veteran striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to step up once again. However, the Norwegian striker and long term stand in will have to compete with fiery front man Alan Smith for a starting place in the Manchester United squad. Sir Alex will also be hoping Serbian defender Nemanja Vidic will return to partner Rio Ferdinand at the heart of Manchester United’s defence. Vidic returned to action in Manchester United’s 3-0 Champions League defeat against AC Milan a couple of weeks ago after breaking his collarbone. The tough defender also appeared in United’s 1-0 win over local rivals Manchester City before sitting out the clubs final game of the season as United crashed to a 1-0 home defeat against West Ham United. Neither side are in outstanding form. Manchester United go into the match with the best recent form out of the two sides having won two and drawn once out of their last five games. Chelsea meanwhile haven’t won since their 1-0 win in the Champions League Semi Final against Liverpool on the 25th of last month not a great record for such a large club!. In the five games since then they have drawn four and lost once, although both sides have been taking things easy during the last two games due to the title having already being decided. The two sides met last weekend at Stamford Bridge in the Premiership in a dour match that finished 0-0 with neither side fielding their strongest XI. The FA Cup Final on Saturday is likely to have very different team selections with both managers fielding their strongest possible side. Neither side have had an easy run to the FA Cup Final, Manchester United faced Premiership opposition in every round of the competition and have successfully negotiated what has been a tough run of fixtures. Sir Alex Ferguson’s men have beaten Aston Villa, Portsmouth, Reading, Middlesborough and Watford to reach the final with every game being as competitive as the fixture would suggest. Chelsea have had an easier run to the final on paper and didn’t meet Premiership opposition until the Quarter Finals, the Blues successfully negotiated their way past Macclesfield Town, Nottingham Forest and Norwich City before dispatching of Tottenham Hotspur and Blackburn Rovers in the later stages of the competition. The bookmakers are having trouble deciding who will win this one with Manchester United slight favourites at 6/4 and Chelsea not far behind at 7/4. The two strikers are joint favourites to score first with both Didier Drogba and Wayne Rooney priced at 6/1 to net the first FA Cup Final Goal at the new Wembley Stadium, footballer of the year Christiano Ronaldo is priced at 7/1 for first goal scorer and seems like to be the best bet. This looks like it will be a great game for the neutrals as the two best teams in the country go head to head for the final piece of silverware of the season. Goals can not be guaranteed but what can be for certain is that there will be tears of both joy and sadness in what should be a compelling match.
