Wales v Czech Republic
Wales Euro 2008 qualifier match against Czech Republic is expected to be the swansong of talismanic captain Ryan Giggs after the Manchester United winger announced his retirement form international football.
Wales Euro 2008 aspirations seem all but over unless they hit a ripe patch of form. Jason Koumas and Danny Coyne do not feature in the squad, while Danny Gabbidon and Gareth Bale are facing a fitness battle. The previous meeting between the two teams saw Czech come out on top with a 2-1 victory.
Toshack admitted that his team faces an uphill task if they are to pip the Czech team. However he believes the potential is there for Wales to win their next match. "I'm not bullish about next weekend, I realise the difficulties of the game next Saturday. But we know we were cheated a bit with both their goals when we lost in the Czech Republic, so we know we can beat them", he said.
Meanwhile the Czech manager Karel Bruckner is facing a mini-injury crisis of his own. Zdenek Grygera and Martin Jiranek are both out of the squad, while keeper Petr Cech is doubtful for the game. Bruckner has called up Tomas Hubschman and Tomas Zapotocny as replacements for Grygera and Jiranek. Domestic league top-scorer Lubos Pecka gets a look-in while Tomas Rosicky has been included.
Bruckner said that it was important for the team to stay in the right frame of mind in order to continue their pursuit of the qualifying place. "We have to tune the team into the right mode and right form. It is a handicap that Tomas Rosicky and Milan Baros have not played a regular match for a long time. But on the other hand for example David Rozehnal played in 60 games this year and it could be a greater problem", Bruckner added. Czech Republic currently are in second position with 13 points, along with Germany and Republic of Ireland, while Wales have 6 points from 5 matches played.
