Four years ago, Uruguay were beaten to a spot at the 2006 World Cup by Australia. They were forced to go through the lottery of the playoffs this time too, but luck was with the South Americans as they beat Costa Rica 2-1 on aggregate.

Uruguay have been grouped with Mexico, South Africa and France at the 2010 World Cup. They were with France in the 2002 edition too. In that tournament, La Celeste started off on the wrong foot with a loss to Denmark but managed to secure draws against both Senegal and France. Unfortunately, it was not enough to take them to the next round.

Uruguay will be hoping that Diego Forlan comes good at this year’s World Cup. The Atletico Madrid striker was a key part of his club’s victorious Europa League campaign and coach Oscar Tabarez will want him to be firing on all cylinders this June.
