United TrebleUnited were unable to achieve a treble this season. They were unable to achieve a double after an FA Cup Final defeat to Chelsea. Whilst Manchester United won the English Premier League a season which was full of promise ultimately fell short of the mark. Now in the space of a couple of days Sir Alex Ferguson has completed the treble. A treble in transfers that is. A mammoth £40 million shopping spree sure to avert any disappointment at the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League exits and set the intentions of the club for the season to come. Owen Hargreaves has been a long term target for Manchester United and it was finally announced that the England midfielder would join the club on July 1st. However, that transfer makes up only £17 million of the £40 million supermarket sweep. Late on Wednesday night Ferguson played his trump card when it was announced that young superstars Anderson and Nani would form part of the United squad for the 2007-08 English Premier League season. This is a major signing for the Premiership club not only in terms of money. A number of top European teams have been linked with the young stars. 19 year old Anderson will be arriving from Porto. He is dubbed as one of the top young talents on the world stage and won player of the tournament back in the 2005 World Under 17 tournament. Anderson is also part of the international Brazil squad who will compete in the Summer Copa America. 20 year old Nani hails from Sporting Lisbon. Again he has been a longer term target for United who have finally manager to attract the young star. Nani is a Portugese international player who has dazzled on both domestic and international fronts. He will line up alongside fellow Portugese whizzkid Cristiano Ronaldo who won footballer of the year and many plaudits for his efforts this season. All the new arrivals will make their appearance for Manchester United as they warm up for the season in a Far East tour.Tags: FA Cup, Manchester United, English Premier League, UEFA Champions League, Owen Hargreaves, Anderson, Nani, Copa America, Brazil, Cristiano Ronaldo Posted: 31st May 2007 |
