The U.S. was a part of three of the first four World Cups but had to wait for four decades in order to make their next appearance in the tournament. While a third place finish in the inaugural edition of the tournament represents, United States’ best performance in the competition, they have struggled in recent years, managing to qualify out of the group just twice in the last five tournaments.

They had a disappointing tournament last time around, collecting just one point from their three games to finish at the bottom of their group table.

Road to 2010 World Cup

United States were clear favorites to qualify to the World Cup and they started their campaign in a confident fashion, beating Barbados 9-0 on aggregate in the second round before winning five of their six games in the next round.

However they were made to work hard in the fourth round and managed to top the group by a slender margin of one point to secure their place in the World Cup this summer.

Landon Donavan will be key to United States’ ambitions in the tournament with the LA Galaxy star having an excellent time out on loan to Everton early this year. Clint Dempsey has also excelled with Fulham this season along with Eddie Johnson who has scored five goals from his fifteen games with Aris Thessaloniki.
