Ujfalusi Named As Captain For Euro 2008The Czech Republic have named Tomas Ujfalusi as the team’s captain for the duration of the Euro 2008 Championships in Austria and Switzerland. Coach Karel Bruckner made the decision after the established captain, Arsenal midfielder Tomas Rosicky announced that he would not be able to participate this summer due to a reoccurring knee problem. Besides Ujfalusi, goalkeeper Petr Cech had been considered for the role and this has been recognized by naming him as the deputy captain.
The 30-year old said "It is a great honour. I will lead the national team during Euro 2008 as well as the two preparatory matches ahead of the championships”
So far, Ujfalusi has played 66 times for his country and is highly regarded within Czech football. The centre back has just completed an impressive season with Italian club Florentina, where he helped them to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup and clinch a Champions League position ahead of AC Milan.
Ujfalusi’s fine form has led to the player recently transferring to Spanish team Atletico Madrid on a three year contract for next season. Tags: Czech Republic, Tomas Ujfalusi, Euro 2008 Posted: |
