UEFA Cup Results match day 2

Group A saw moneybags Manchester City start off their group stage campaign with a 3-2 home win over Twente with perhaps their strongest opponents Schalke being held to a 1-1 draw at Real Racing Club. Schalke lead the group but have played a game more than City.

German compatriots Hertha followed the trend in Group B by failing to score against an equally unsuccessful Metalist. Turkish giants Galatasaray did manage to find the net twice in Benfica and head the group with maximum points from their first two games.

Partizan are now the only team in Group C without a win following their defeat at the hands of Stuttgart whilst Standard matched Sampdoria by winning their first game thanks to an impressive home win by a single goal over Spanish side Sevilla.

Tottenham Hotspur continued the Redknapp revival with a fine 4-0 thumping of Dinamo Zagreb at White Hart Lane. However, they still trail Group D pacesetters Udinese whose trip to Moscow saw their second consecutive win this time at the expense of Spartak.

Milan consolidated their lead in Group E with a laboured single-goal victory over Braga. Wolfsburg declared their intent with a somewhat more impressive 5-1 home win against Heerenveen. English FA Cup winners Portsmouth were the non-playing team this time but must have looked on with concern as qualification will be keenly fought in this group.

1-0 was the order of the day in Group F as Zilina tried but failed in Amsterdam but Aston Villa triumphed against Slavia in Prague. Villa head the group with maximum points and must now be looking beyond the group stage and into the latter part of the competition.

Another team sitting pretty with 6 points out of 6 are St Etienne who dispatched Rosenborg 3-0 in France. With the four other teams in Group G all on a single point including Valencia whose opening game at home against Copenhagen ended in a 1-1 draw.

Dutch side Feyenoord must be wondering what has hit them in Group H. CSKA Moscow left with three goals and 3 points and leaving Feyenoord rock bottom and Moscow 2 wins from 2. Nancy’s 2-2 draw at Lech has given them a very good chance of progressing in a UEFA Cup group that includes Deportivo of Spain.
