UEFA Champions League Round up Nov 6th
Manchester United remain top of Group E after being held to a 1-1 draw against Celtic in the “battle of Britain” at Celtic Park. Celtic went ahead after 13 minutes through a classy Scott McDonald lob, before Ryan Giggs equalised the game late on for United, after intense pressure from the reigning champions throughout the game.
It was a thoroughly desrerved point for both sides, though Sir Alex Ferguson will be wondering how they left Celtic without all three points, as the Scottish champions cling on to hope of qualifying from a tough Group E, though it may take something of a miracle to happen.
Villarreal remain joint leaders with Manchester United after a surprise 2-2 home draw against Danish side AaB Alborg.
Giuseppe Rossi put Villarreal in front just before half time before Jeppe Curth equalised for the away side. Guillermo Franco slotted his side back in front shortly after and it looked as if Villarreal were heading for top of the table until Andres Due curled home a superb free-kick in the final minutes of the game to share the spoils.
The result means Villarreal fail to capitalise on United’s draw against Celtic, and allows AaB Alborg to stay in the running for qualification, though the Danish side will be focusing on finishing third to drop into the UEFA Cup rather than carrying on their Champions League dream.
Lyonmoved to the top of Group F as they cruised past Steaua Bucharest at the Stade Gerland.
Juninho sent the French champions into the lead, and it came as no surprise that the Brazilian opened the scoring through a trademark free-kick. Lyon continued to apply pressure on the Romanian side throughout the match and Anthony Reveillere finish the game off in the final minutes for Lyon.
The result leaves Lyon top of the group, and even though have the same goal difference as second place Bayern Munich, the 10 goals scored in 4 games means they sit above the German giants, whilst Bucharest can only hope for a UEFA Cup spot.
Bayern Munich missed out on the opportunity to guarantee qualification into the next stage of the tournament after a 1-1 draw with Fiorentina.
Adrian Mutu sent the Italian’s in front with a magnificent volley, before in-form Bayern leveled late on in the second half through Tim Borowski to stay five points clear of La Viola.
Bayern now sit level on points with Lyon, whilst Fiorentina surprisingly are without a win in Group F, and will have to pull off a miraculous comeback should they qualify for the next stage.
Arsenal continued in their recent blip with a 1-1 draw against Turkish side Fenerbahce, as the Gunners’ increased the pressure on themselves to qualify from Group G.
Arsenal, who were missing many key figures after their weekend Premiership clash with Stoke, dominated large periods of the game with their trademark style of football, though Luis Aragones clearly learnt from their previous 5-2 thrashing by launching an effective resistance this time round.
Arsenal now sit two points above Porto, but Arsene Wenger is likely to be frustrated with the draw after previously beating the Turkish Super Lig runners-up 5-2 in the formidable Sukru Saracoglu.
Portocapitalised on Arsenal’s 1-1 draw against Fenerbahce with a dramatic late 2-1 win against Dinamo Kiev.
The Ukrainian side took the lead on 21 minutes through Artem Milevsky before Jorge Rolando leveled the game for the away side. Lucho Gonzalez then completed the magical comeback for the Portuguese champions, though the midfielder will regret celebrating his dramatic goal as he was sent off for “over celebrating”.
Juventus ensured qualification into the next stages after beating Real Madrid 2-0 in the clash of the European titans on Wednesday. Alessandro del Piero silenced the Santiago Bernabeu after 17 minutes, and doubled his tally mid-way through the second half to bolster his excellent European scoring record, bringing the Italian veteran to 49 goals in Europe.
Real Madrid still have it all to do with Zenit St. Petersburg two points behind the Spanish giants, whilst Juventus can now sit back until the next stage.
Zenit St. Petersburg recorded their first UEFA Champions League victory this season with a 2-0 win over BATE Borisov in Group H.
Pavel Pogrebnyak fired the UEFA Cup holders into the lead on 34 minutes, before record signing Danny ensure victory for the Russians after Sebastien Puygrenier was sent off for two yellow card offences.
Zenit now remain in the running for a place in the next stage as they sit two points off Real Madrid, though the Belarusian minnows BATE are more likely to focus on third place to ensure they continue their European adventure in the UEFA Cup.
