UEFA Champions League Review- November 5th 2008Group A Roma destroyed Chelsea’s previously impeccable defence as the Italian side ran out as 3-1 winners in a night to forget for Chelsea at the Stadio Olimpico.
Christian Panucci opened the scoring on 34 minutes whilst Mirko Vucinic added a superb brace for Roma. John Terry managed to pull one-back for the Premier League runners-up before Deco was shown red for a second yellow card.
Chelsea came into the game looking to secure their place in the next round, whereas now the defeat has left the group wide open.
Bordeaux restored hopes of qualification in Group A after a precious 2-1 away victory against Romanian surprise package CFR Cluj.
Yoann Gourcuff sent the French side ahead before Dani levelled the game soon after, but it was a Wendel free-kick that secure the points for Bordeaux on 38 minutes.
Bordeaux now sit 1 point behind group leaders Chelsea, level on points with Roma and 2 points clear of CFR Cluj.
Group B Inter Milan required a late equaliser to earn a share of the spoils against Cypriot minnows Anorthosis Famagusta.
Inter took the lead through Zlatan Ibrahimovic before a defensive howler for Inter allowed Cedric Bordon to equalise. Marco Materazzi then restored the lead for Jose Mourinho’s men before Famagusta responded instantly through Georgios Panagi.
And the Cypriot champions had thought they had pulled off the biggest shock in the clubs history when Nikos Frousos smashed home their third of the night, before Julio Cruz grabbed a late leveller to send Inter 3 points clear of Famagusta who remain second in Group B.
Panathinaikos pulled off a surprise victory in Germany as they dented Werder Bremen’s hopes of qualification through a 3-0 win.
Vagelis Mantzios, Giorgios Karagounis and Alexandros Tziolis all scored for the Henk ten Cate’s side as the Greek runners-up now move to third in the table, a point behind Anorthosis Famgusta.
Group C Basel ended Barcelona’s 11-match winning run in all competitions after a 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp, as Barcelona ensured their place in the next stage of the competition.
Lionel Messi sent Barcelona ahead before Eren Derdiyok equalised for the Swiss champions, giving Christian Gross’s side hope of securing third place in the group to gain UEFA Cup qualification.
Sporting Lisbon also ensured their passage into the next stage of the competition as they won narrowly 1-0 against Shakhtar Donetsk at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.
Derlei managed to secure the victory for the Portuguese runners-up, as Shakhtar will now look to secure their place in the UEFA cup by finishing third in the group.
Group D Liverpool and Atletico Madrid both remain in pole position to qualify from Group D after a thrilling 1-1 draw.
Maxi Rodriguez sent Madrid into the lead on 37 minutes; before Liverpool were awarded a controversial penalty which skipper Steven Gerrard converted late in added time.
Marseille claimed their first points of the campaign with a 3-0 thrashing of PSV Eindhoven at the Stade Velodrome.
A Bakari Kone brace on top of a Mamadou Niang goal secured the win for the French side, though either side will have to pull of a miracle should they qualify ahead of Atletico Madrid or Liverpool.
