Tuncay Sanli - Turkey

Turkey’s pacey forward Tuncay Sanli could make a big impact at this summer’s Euro 2008. His athleticism and an eye for goal make him a player that could be the difference for Turkey. The 26 year old has until last season spent his entire career in Turkey and so Euro 2008 represents a major opportunity for him to enhance his reputation.

Tuncay is direct, pacey and can score all kinds of goals. He is a dynamic player who can change a game in an instant. It is these kinds of attributes that have led some to compare him to Thierry Henry.

Tuncay began his career at Turkish lower league club Sakaryaspor where he primarily played as a winger. Following this he moved to Fenerbache in 2004 where he quickly established himself as a forward. During his four seasons in Istanbul, Tuncay won the Turkish League Title on three occasions and became the club’s record goal scorer in European competition.

In June 2007 Tuncay completed a transfer to English Premier League club Middlesbrough. After an initial difficult spell, he began to show the kind of form that got him his transfer.  He scored vital goals for Middlesborough including the winner’s against Arsenal and Derby County and finished his first season with eight goals.

Tuncay has been playing for the Turkey national team for several years making 52 appearances and scoring 14 goals. Perhaps his most important contribution to date was the hat trick that he scored against Switzerland to secure a place at the 2006 World Cup Finals.

At Euro 2008, Tuncay will be regarded as an important player for Turkey. If he can find his form, then on his day, Tuncay is capable of breaching the tightest of defenses.
