Trotters Count The Cost Of Return To Good Old Days

Bolton Wanderers are reviving recent memories of successful league and European adventures under ex-boss Sam Allardyce, as their current side, under Scottish manager Owen Coyle, lie sixth in the EPL.

However, squad improvement and costs associated with more recent managerial changes led the club into losses of £35m to June 2010, nearly three times the previous year’s figure.

Wanderers were unfortunate to lose at the Reebok to a late goal from resurgent Liverpool two weekends ago.

But they put on a stellar display to beat Spurs last Saturday. And were seconds away from another eye-catching victory, at Everton this midweek.

In front of watching England boss Fabio Capello, striker Kevin Davies lead a rampant Bolton to a convincing win over a Spurs side who beat European champions Inter three days previously.

His two goals, and strikes from Getar Steinsson and Martin Petrov, saw Bolton win 4-2. And Ivan Klasnic’s second-half strike looked set to give Coyle’s men a 1-0 victory at Everton before Jermaine Beckford’s stoppage-time equaliser.

Commenting on Bolton’s huge 2009/10 losses, chairman Phil Gartside explained: “The cost of transition from one manager to another is always expensive. And we wanted to bring wages down in the summer but we couldn’t because the market has died.”

He tried to reassure fans, saying: “We are a trading club, not a selling club,” and added that owner Eddie Davies “still enjoys the games and is a massive supporter of the club.”

Bolton visit improving Wolves in the EPL this Saturday afternoon.
