Tranquillo Barnetta - Switzerland

 

Tranquillo Barnetta comes into Euro 2008 with the great expectations of a nation on his shoulders. Regarded as one of the most talented Swiss midfielders in a generation, Barnetta can provide the vital link between the midfielder and the forwards with his creativity and passing ability.

 

Barnetta began his career at his home town club, St Gallen. He made his debut at the age of 17 and after impressing in international youth tournaments was transferred to German side Bayer Leverkusen. After a two year spell on loan to Hannover he broke into the Leverkusen first team and has remained a vital player ever since.

 

Barnetta made his international debut for Switzerland in 2004 in a game against the Republic of Ireland. After impressing at Leverkusen, he was included in Switzerland’s 2006 World Cup squad. The tournament was produced mixed feelings for Barnetta. He provided an assist for a vital goal in the game against Togo, but was one of the players who missed a penalty as the Swiss were eliminated by Ukraine.

 

Whatever happens at Euro 2008, Barnetta is sure to have a positive future. There are many top European clubs rumored to be interested in the playmaker and this summer he will have the perfect platform.
