Tottenham HotspursTottenham head coach Juande Ramos has used the summer transfer window to change his squad dramatically from the one that he inherited from Martin Jol last September. Ramos has spent in excess of £40 Million on new players and sold eight of last season’s first team squad.
The biggest arrival of the summer is Blackburn Rovers winger David Bentley. He joins for a reported £17 Million and should prove to be a valuable asset for the club over the next few years. Ramos has also signed Croatian playmaker Luka Modric from Dinamo Zagreb for a reported £15.8 Million. The 22 year old will certainly add something extra to the Tottenham midfield but he will need time to adapt to the ferocity of Premier League football.
Spurs have also bought two new goalkeepers for the new season. Brazilian Heurelho Gomes has moved from Dutch Champions PSV Eindhoven for £7.8 Million. He developed a remarkable reputation in Holland for keeping clean sheets and he is sure to prove a top class addition to the Tottenham team. Veteran goalkeeper Cesar Sanchez has also moved to White Hart Lane, he joins from Real Zaragoza for an undisclosed fee. He will provide experienced back up for Gomes.
Giovani Dos Santos is yet another addition to the squad. He is an exciting talent who was regarded as surplus to requirements at Barcelona and moves to North London for £4.7 Million. The club have also added talented youngsters John Bostock and Mirko Ranieri to the squad.
Just as there have been plenty of new faces arriving at the club, there have also been a large number who have left during the summer.
The most notable departure is Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane. The 28 year old had recently committed his long term future to the club, but interest from Liverpool the team he supported as a youngster was too hard to turn down. He is reported to have cost Liverpool around £19 Million.
Ramos has also allowed several fringe players to leave. Goalkeeper Radnek Cerny has moved to Championship team QPR on a free transfer. Finnish midfielder Teemu Tainio has signed for Sunderland for an undisclosed fee along with Steed Malbranque and Pascal Chimbonda.
England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has also moved on after a torrid season. He has moved to Blackburn Rovers for £3.5 Million. Finally, defenders Anthony Gardner and Younes Kaboul have also left. Gardner joins newly-promoted Hull City for £2 Million and Kaboul has signed for Portsmouth for £6 Million.
Tottenham supporters are once again beginning the new season with the belief that this will be the year that they can finally challenge the dominance of the top four teams. After the troubles under Jol last year, new found optimism exists under Coach Ramos, particularly after the Carling Cup Final win over Chelsea. The likes of Gomes, Bentley and Modric are positive signings but it is hard to judge how good Spurs will be this season. Keane and Berbatov scored just under 50 percent of the team’s total league goals last year and with one already departed and rumours strongly suggesting that the other will follow, the new season may well prove to be a case of one step forward, two steps back.
