Togo banned from next two Cups of Nations

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have announced that Togo will not be allowed to participate in the next two Cup of Nations tournaments, citing the Togo government’s decision to withdraw the team, apparently against the their wishes.

The Togolese government ordered their team home in the wake of the gun attack on their bus in Cabinda province, two days before the start of the tournament three weeks ago, after the team had seemingly determined to play.

A CAF statement read: “The players publicly expressed their willingness to return to the Nations Cup to compete. But the Togo government decided to call back their national team.

“The decision by the political authorities contravenes CAF and African Nations Cup regulations. The executive committee has therefore banned Togo from the next two African Nations Cups with a fine of $50,000 handed to the Togolese National Football Association in conformity with article 78 of Africa Cup of Nations regulations.”

Article 78 concerns “A forfeit notified less than twenty days before the start or during the final competition” and specifies “the suspension of the concerned national association for the following two editions of the African Cup of Nations.”

CAF also announced that Mali’s Koman Coulibaly will referee tomorrow’s final between Egypt and Ghana. The 39-year-old is officiating at his fourth ACN and took charge of the Zambia v. Tunisia and Nigeria v. Mozambique matches in Angola.
