Thuram fails PSG medicalVeteran French defender Lilian Thuram's move to PSG is in doubt after a medical revealed that the former Juventus player has a heart problem. Lilian Thuram is reportedly suffering from cardiac hypertrophy, a condition which results in thickening of the walls of the heart. The 36 year old was due to sign a one year contract with the French club, but the news has stalled the deal. Further tests will be conducted on Thuram to decide whether or not he should continue playing football.
The same condition also took the life of Thuram's brother Antonio on the basketball court. Thuram retired from international football after France made a first round exit at Euro 2008. He did not play in France’s last group game against Italy, citing that he was not mentally prepared for the game. He is France's highest capped player, with 142 appearances to his name.
Thuram joined Barcelona from Juventus along with Gianluca Zambrotta in 2006 after the Turin club was relegated to Serie B following a match fixing scandal. However tests done when joining the Catalan club did not reveal a heart problem.
Thuram was planning a return to Ligue 1 after spending twelve years away from France. His last French club was Monaco, after which he moved to Parma in Italy. He was part of the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 winning French team. Tags: PSG, Lilian Thuram, Euro 2008, France Posted: 29th June 2008 |
