The only way is up for the Toffees

Everton slipped to the bottom of the EPL, despite a well-earned draw at Fulham last Saturday, as fellow strugglers West Ham won elsewhere to swap places with David Moyes’ men.

Since their remarkable comeback draw with Manchester United, Everton have lost at home to Newcastle and exited the Carling Cup at the hands of League One’s bottom side Brentford.

And they receive a double whammy of bad injury news last week, when strikers Louis Saha and Victor Anichebe were ruled out for three and six weeks respectively.

Victory over Fulham would have taken Everton out of the bottom three. But Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer was in fine form, denying Yakubu twice.

And Moyes accepted that the Goodison crowd were right to boo his players after the Newcastle defeat, admitting: “I would have booed after that.”

With a shortage of goals recently, the injuries to Saha and Anichebe are a particular body blow.

Moyes expects Saha to be out for “two to three weeks”, having been injured since the end of August. Moyes said: “He goes to a facility in France to get treatment and looked after. And it will be two or three weeks before he is available.”

Anichebe has undergone knee surgery, and the 22-year-old will, according to Moyes, be out for “six weeks or so.”

Defender Sylvain Distin says Everton aren’t feeling the pressure, however, noting that “You have two consecutive wins and you’re in the top half of the table.”

Everton visit mid-table Birmingham City this Saturday.
