The hard work starts now for Di Matteo

All three promoted teams are sitting comfortably on 19 points as the half way stage of the Premier League season approaches.

It seems that the usual talk about the gulf in class between newly promoted clubs and the elite has gone out the window at St James’ Park, Bloomfield Road and the Hawthorns, but there’s a long way to go yet.

Burnley were a revelation at this point in last season’s campaign and ended up back in the Championship.

In West Brom’s case, they can only beat themselves this season in their bid to stay up.

A 4-1 win at Goodison Park demonstrated the quality and belief they have to grab results on their travels and picking up points on the road will go a long way in helping them close in on their survival target.

As well as shocking the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal, the Baggies also have a Carling Cup quarter-final to look forward to.

If there was a manager of the first four months of the season award, Roberto Di Matteo would be a serious contender.

The former Chelsea star has worked wonders and belies the stereotypical negative approach of Italian managers as his side continues to produce excellent football.

But he would probably be the first to say there’s no point in praising their progress until they to do the exact opposite of what Burnley did last year.
