The Pompey Chimes Are Ringing
Portsmouth remain bottom but, as some fans have been quick to point out, they have one more point than next opponents Tottenham had after eight games last season. The team produced this victory despite not receiving their September salaries when they fell due on the Wednesday before the game. The club had simply run out of money and were no longer in a position to wait for owner Sulaiman Al-Fahim’s promised investment. Al-Fahim had promised a cash injection of £50m “in three to four weeks.” But the lack of finance forced Monday’s announcement that his 42-day tenure as owner was over. Al-Fahim sold 90%, and overall control, to Saudi businessman Ali Al-Faraj, who was involved in the consortium which unsuccessfully bid for Pompey in August. Al-Faraj was last week responsible for a short-term cash injection, reportedly £5m, which allowed all salaries, including that of chief executive Peter Storrie, to be paid this Tuesday. Little is known for sure about Al-Faraj, with newspaper investigations revealing a very low-profile figure, in contrast to his publicity-hungry predecessor, who now imagines himself as Pompey’s global ambassador. But the new regime has been quick to appoint Israeli Avram Grant as director of football to assist the massively over-worked Hart. Grant was former manager Harry Redknapp’s technical director for 13 months to July 2007, when he left for the same post at Chelsea before becoming their manager. And Storrie has been quick to stifle speculation that Grant would be taking up Pompey’s managerial reins in due course. He said: “People can construe it how they like. The fact is he (Grant) has been brought in as a director of football and that has been made abundantly clear. “He will work with Paul. But Paul will select the team.” One man pleased to see Grant return is Pompey’s England international keeper David James, who gushed: “I love Avram, he’s a great guy. “He’s a very wise man and his football knowledge is immense. It’s a very good move.” Faraj made his first public statement to the club’s website on Wednesday, promising “a stable foundation in all aspects of the business” and a “financial restructuring and a restructuring of the board.” He also confirmed that the new board would be working “alongside chief executive Peter Storrie”, which provides a happy ending to a turbulent period for the £1.2m-per-year official.
