The most awaited Asian Cup will kick off in Bangkok on 7th July 2007. Iraq will face tough hosts Thailand in the first match of this prestigious tournament. Both countries are separated by huge distance in FIFA rankings. Iraq is ranked at 84^th while Thailand is ranked at 122^nd however this is not a reason for the home team to give up the fight.

Thailand has shown a very impressive performance this year marked by their latest success beating Qatar (FIFA ranking 85^th) 3-1 in Bangkok. Thailand has also showed significant improvement as a result of their training camp in Germany. Thailand coach, Pholchivin has called up two veteran Thailand stars, Keatisuk ‘Zico’ Senamuang and playmaker Tawan Sripan to lead a young team. Thailand relies on their speed to quickly counter attack opponents but their defense often struggles due to their relatively short built.

Iraq is a strong team in the Middle East, although their ranking is way below Saudi Arabia (63rd). Armed with 24 years old Younis Mahmous who is top scorer in Qatar league Iraq poses a significant threat to Thailand’s goal. Mahdi Karim’s creativity will also be required in this match.
