Taxing Times For Redknapp

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp was last week charged with two counts of tax evasion, after a lengthy investigation by City of London Police and HM Revenue and Customs.

The charges relate to alleged evasion of £40,000 tax and national insurance contributions between 2002 and 2007 and refer to his time at Portsmouth, who are currently bottom of the EPL and in desperate financial trouble.

Redknapp has been charged alongside his then chairman Milan Mandaric and Chief Executive Peter Storrie.

Tottenham have repeatedly stressed that the case would not impact upon his employment as White Hart Lane supremo, and a club spokesman confirmed that “His position remains unaffected and it is a private matter.”

Redknapp will appear at City of Westminster Magistrates Court on 11th February.

Spurs’ campaign for a top-four place has faltered recently, with one point and no goals in their last two games, including what could prove to be a vital 2-0 loss at fellow top-four contenders Liverpool.

Strugglers Hull City came away from White Hart Lane with a point thanks solely to a world-class display from goalkeeper Boaz Myhill, who made at least half-a-dozen remarkable saves.

However, Spurs were lacklustre and toothless at Anfield. And Redknapp may yet feel the need to do transfer business in the last ten days of the window, despite previous comments that he was “happy” with his current squad.

The lack of January transfer window business could hardly be better summed up than by Redknapp’s lack of action. But it is expected that players will be in-and-out of the Lane before the end of the month.

Thus far three players have gone out on loan to lower league clubs. But Redknapp has inevitably been linked with bigger name arrivals.

These include goalkeepers such as out-of-favour Ben Foster from Manchester United and David James from out-of-money Portsmouth.

Defensive targets include Palermo’s Simon Kjaer, for whom Spurs reportedly offered £11m, which would be the highest deal of this transfer window to date. And moves have been mooted for former Spurs defender Younes Kaboul, a colleague of David James at Portsmouth.

Brazilian midfielder Sandros was a Redknapp target in the summer. And Spurs renewed their interest this time around. However, Brazilian radio reports last weekend suggested that the player will not be leaving his club Internacional this January.

Redknapp has also been linked with a move for Real Madrid striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy, the Dutch international ex-Manchester United star, though this may depend on misfit Roman Pavlyuchenko moving on. And it appears that moves by Zenit St Petersburg to bring the Russian home may have foundered.

Also on his way out could be full-back Alan Hutton, possibly to London rivals West Ham. Spurs have tracked Bordeaux’s Mathieu Chalme as a potential replacement.

And Inter’s Jose Mourinho has shown an interest in Jermaine Jenas, with Spurs possibly lining up Real Madrid’s Mohammadou Diarra as an £8m replacement.

However, Redknapp told Sky Sports today: “I’d be very surprised if we signed anyone (in this window).” Yes, Harry.
