Uruguay coach Oscar Washington Tabarez hailed his side’s convincing 3-0 win over tournament hosts South Africa “historic” and called on his team to build on their achievements.

He told Reuters: “We are duty bound to follow on from this achievement, particularly with young people who have never seen anything like what happened (against South Africa.”

And Tabarez, who was coach in 1990, when La Celeste last won a World Cup finals match, added:

“This was a historic result. But this doesn’t mean we’re done. There are lots of better teams. We’ll trouble them but we’ll have to play very well.”
