Switzerland’s initial two World Cup campaigns proved to be the most successful for the team as they qualified to the quarter finals in 1934 and 1938. However after matching their best performance on their home soil in 1954, the Swiss managed to qualify to the competition just once in their next 12 attempts.

Switzerland put up a decent display last time around, topping their group that included France but were dumped out of the competition by Ukraine on penalties.

Road to 2010 World Cup

Switzerland were expected to secure a comfortable passage to the World Cup and this they did as Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side topped their group in a comfortable fashion in spite of winning just one of their last three games.

Switzerland will be without defender Christoph Spycher who is out injured but Hitzfeld has included Philippe Senderos in spite of the defender’s poor run of form. Basle’s Xherdan Shaqiri could make a shock debut for Switzerland after impressing Hitzfeld.
