Del Bosque – Swiss Loss Has Done Us Good

Spain boss Vicente del Bosque believes his side’s opening defeat by Switzerland could have been a blessing in disguise as they chase a place in World Cup quarter-finals.

The Euro 2008 winners began their campaign in South Africa in sluggish fashion, slumping to a 1-0 loss, although the Spaniards have gradually improved and showed flashes of their best form agaisnt Honduras and Chile.

And Del Bosque thinks their slow start has forced them to double their efforts as they prepare for their last-16 clash against Portugal.

He said: “That first stumble versus Switzerland has been highly motivating psychologically. I don't think a defeat is ever good. It was damaging to us and we were very anxious because we thought we were going to be facing many difficulties.

“I don't think we had to learn any lessons, though, because this group is very humble and modest. We were not floating along on cloud nine at all, we fully realise that every match is difficult in itself.”
