Ottmar Hitzfeld deserves a lot of credit for masterminding Switzerland’s magnificent victory over Spain. On a technical level the European champions were superior, but the organisation demonstrated by the Swiss was reminiscent of Hitzfeld’s Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund sides of the past.

 

Switzerland’s style suits them when they are facing opposition who dominate the ball. We know they are well-drilled, disciplined and spirited, but they might be enticed to come out and attack more in their remaining group fixtures against Chile and Honduras, so it’ll be interesting to see if they can rise to the challenge.
