Swiss Captain Frei Out Of Championships

The sight of a tearful Alexander Frei leaving the pitch in Switzerland’s opening game of the Euro 2008 Championships is perhaps symbolic of how things are going to go for the joint hosts. Prior to the tournament Frei’s return to form following a lengthy spell on the sidelines was highlighted by many commentators as crucial if the Swiss were to have any impact on the tournament.

Frei suffered torn interior ligaments in his left knee after a challenge from Czech Republic defender Zdenek Grygera just minutes before the end of the first half. In Frei’s absence, Switzerland lost the game 1-0 with a goal from Czech forward Vaclav Sverkos.

Although the injury was unclear at the time, its seems that Frei knew the extent of the damage as he was aided by officials to the touchline, he could be seen to be crying as it dawned on him that his Euro 2008 was over.

It was later confirmed that Frei will miss the rest of the tournament and is expected to be out for two months.

Switzerland coach Kobi Kuhn has spoken about the injury saying that “to lose our skipper is a disaster”. Kuhn also revealed that the Borussia Dortmund striker will remain with his Swiss team mates for the duration of the tournament. He said “It’s his desire, if he hadn’t said it himself; I would have asked him to…He’s a leader and will remain a leader.”

As Frei’s injury occurred during the tournament, Switzerland are unable to call up a replacement.
