Sweden v IcelandSweden will be looking to a victory against Iceland in their Euro 2008 qualifier match on Tuesday even as the UEFA disciplinary committee is expected to announce its decision over Sweden's match against Denmark that was called off after an irate Danish fan attacked the referee for giving a last minute penalty to Sweden.
While it is being speculated that Sweden will be awarded the match with a 3-0 margin, coach Sune Hellströmer will be furious with his team for allowing Denmark to come back into the game after taking a 3-0 lead in the first half. Two goals from Johan Elmander sandwiched between Petter Hansson's goal looked enough for a victory.
However Denmark came back strongly in the second half and drew level through goals from Daniel Agger, Jon Dahl Tomasson and Leon Andreasen. Referee Herbert Fandel awarded a penalty to Sweden just minutes before the final whistle following a punch from Christian Poulsen on Markus Rosenberg, which triggered the incident.
Sweden can go on top of the group table if the match is indeed decided in their favor. Sweden currently has 12 points from 6 matches, one point less than group leaders Northern Ireland who have played 6 matches.
Meanwhile Iceland continued its miserable run of form in the qualifiers with a 1-1 draw against Liechtenstein. Iceland is now one place above the bottom, with just 4 points from 6 matches and could slip to the bottom of the table if Latvia win their match in hand.
The game will be played at Råsunda stadium in Solna with the kick off for Sweden v Iceland scheduled at 19:15 (GMT). Tags: Sweden, Euro 2008 qualifier, UEFA, Iceland, Sweden v Iceland Posted: |
