Streller Announces Retirement After Fans ReactionSwiss international striker Marco Streller has announced that he intends to retire from international football after the Euro 2008 tournament that starts this week. His comments come after he was jeered repeatedly during a friendly match against Leichenstein at the weekend. Streller has often endured the taunts of fans throughout his international career. In the World Cup in 2006 he missed one of the crucial penalties against Ukraine that saw the Swiss become the first team to be eliminated from the competition without conceding a goal.
Streller currently plays for Switzerland richest club FC Basel and this is another reason that is cited for the jeers he received from fans during the match. Following the game, Streller stressed that his decision was final. He said "I have talked to the rest of the team about this and I have been thinking about it for a long time. I just won't put up with it anymore”.
Streller made his international debut in 2003 and helped the team to qualify for Euro 2004 before an injury prevented him from playing in the finals in Portugal.
He has played 26 times for his country, scoring 11 goals. Tags: Marco Streller, Euro 2008, Switzerland Posted: |
