Spurs Set To Sign South Africa Star

Tottenham have struck a deal to sign South Africa World Cup star Bongani Khumalo for a fee believed to be in the region of £1.5m.

Khumalo, originally from Swaziland, played all three group games for the Bafana Bafana in the first World Cup to be held on African soil and will arrive at White Hart Lane in January when the transfer window opens.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp decided to snap up the central defender after he impressed during a recent trial with the North London club, although his protracted move is subject to a work permit.

The 23-year-old is currently with South African club Supersport United and had been linked with a move to Scottish champions Rangers.

Redknapp said: “He’s not expensive. It will be a great chance for the kid. He's a great lad. He comes from a poor background and he's desperate for a chance and we're going to give him a chance.”

Khumalo scored in South Africa’s 2-1 win over France in the finals last summer and has also captained Supersport to a third consecutive title.
