Spain not walking on cloud nine yet

Despite handing out a 4-1 thrashing to Russia, Spain coach Luis Aragones does not want the euphoria to get to his team and let them get carried away.

Speaking at a news conference, the Spanish coach said, “We did what we had to do and won the game, but nothing more than that. We have all talked together about the importance of keeping our feet on the ground. There may be euphoria outside the camp but there's no danger of that with us.”

Spain currently top Group D, courtesy David Villa’s hat-trick and Fabregas’ first international goal. But Aragones still feels that the score line does not tell the whole tale.

“There is some satisfaction because our aim was to win and we did that. But we need to be aware of how we won. In the first 15 to 20 minutes of the game we were pretty lucky. For me the bottle is always half full. I don't get down when we lose and I don't get carried away when we win.

I have all our defeats imprinted in my brain, one game in particular (their defeat by France in the last 16 of the 2006 World Cup).”

Spain, who have been labeled under-achievers at major tournaments, will be eager to break the jinx. Their last European Championship trophy came 44 years ago and Aragones knows that Euro 2008 won’t be a walkthrough.

“All we can say to the fans is that we have a group that wants to win this tournament. We aren't going to be satisfied with just getting to the quarters. We have a good side but there are times when we are going to suffer because our opponents here are very good too.” said the Spanish Coach.

Spain are in Group D, along with Sweden, Russia and Greece.
