History

In spite of boasting two of the biggest clubs in world football, Spain has struggled on the international stage. Their best performance in the World Cup so far came back in 1950 when they finished fourth in the competition.

Though Spain has qualified to the last eight World Cups, they have failed to progress past the quarter final stage. Spain were tipped to pose a serious threat last time around and though they easily qualified out of their group, they suffered a heavy 3-1 defeat to France in the knockout stage.

Road to 2010 World Cup

Having won the Euro 2008 competition, Spain went into the qualification campaign high on confidence and were one of the only two teams to maintain a 100 percent record. Vicente Del Bosque was appointed as the coach and the former Real Madrid manager guided Spain to a record breaking run of 15 consecutive victories and matched Brazil’s record of 35 games without tasting defeat.

Key Players

Spain boast a wealth of talent in almost all the areas of the pitch. In Fernando Torres and David Villa, Spain have two of the best strikers in the world and who have scored 60 goals between them last season.

Cesc Fabregas and Xavi will provide the creativity from the midfield while keeper Iker Casillas,  Gerard Pique, Carles Puyol, Xabi Alonso and Andres Iniesta all have had excellent season with their respective clubs.
