Slovenia 1-2 RomaniaRomania topped Group G in the Euro 2008 qualifying rounds with a hard fought 1-2 win away to Slovenia on June 2. It was a keenly contested game in Celje as was even more intense when both teams had one man each sent off later on.
Klemen Lavrič had the early chance to put Slovenia as he collected Robert Koren's cross, but was unable to cash in. Adrian Mutu could have put Romania ahead, but even he tossed his shot over the bar. Slovenia stopper Samir Handanovic was severely tested when Nicolita unleashed a long range shot only to see it thud into the goalkeeper's gloves.
On the 32nd minute Handanovic was tested again when Mutu tried to tap a shot in, but the Slovenia keeper was up to the occasion. Paul Codrea also had a shot on goal, but failed to disturb the nonchalant Slovenia keeper. However Gabriel Sebastian Tamas finally broke his defence after the break with a right-footed volley from 12 yards out.
Mutu was a constant threat and tested Handanovic in the 56th minute, but the latter ensured the game stayed within Slovenia's reach. In the 69th minute Romania doubled their lead when Nicolita's six yard shot crashed into the bottom-right corner.
Romania keeper Bogdan Lobont had a relatively quite game until the 73rd minute when he had to parry off Lavric's shot. Daniel Niculae of Romania and Bostjan Cesar of Slovenia were then sent off by the referee on 80 minutes and the game got scrappy thereafter.
Dare Vrsic clinched a consolation goal for the hosts when he volleyed home on 90 minutes.
Romania are on top of Group G with 14 points from six games, while Slovenia are on the sixth spot with four points from six games. Both teams clash again on Wednesday June 6 in Timisoara.
