History

This will be Slovakia’s first ever World Cup campaign after failing to qualify to the tournament in the three attempts since gaining their independence back in 1993. However they have twice reached the final, in 1934 and 1962, while being a part of Czechoslovakia and qualified to the quarter finals in their final campaign before gaining independence.

Road to 2010 World Cup

Vladimir Weiss’ side surprised everybody by finishing at the top of their qualification group table including victories against Czech Republic and Northern Ireland. Slovakia have been clubbed in a tough group with Italy, Paraguay and New Zealand being the other three teams.

Key Players

There are no major surprises in the 29-man provisional squad picked up by Weiss with Martin Skrtel from Liverpool and Napoli's Marek Hamsik finding a place along with Weiss’ son from Manchester City and Miroslav Stoch of Chelsea.

Skrtel, Filip Holosko and Robert Vittek have been picked in spite of the trio struggling with injuries for the majority of the season. Jan Mucha, Lubos Kamenar, Dusan Kuciak and Dusan Pernis have been picked up as the four keepers in the squad with Weiss expected to decide between Dundee United’s Pernis and Nantes’ Kamenar as the third choice keeper.
