Sheffield United 1-2 WiganBramall Lane was where the action was on the final day of the Premiership as Wigan and Sheffield United engaged in a relegation dogfight. To be honest, this was the most exciting match on the last day and had supporters from both sides on the edge of their seats.
Wigan struck on the 14th minute through Paul Scharner and it looked all over for United, but the Blades lived for another 45 minutes thanks to a fine finish from Jon Stead. His header on 38 minutes triggered hopes of staying in the Premiership.
Danny Webber came close for the Blades, but his shot hit the post. Meanwhile former United player David Unsworth took a cool penalty to help his side avoid relegation. The penalty resulted after Phil Jagielka handled the ball in the area from Kevin Kilbane’s free-kick.
Emile Heskey had a good chance to extend Wigan's lead, but United keeper Paddy Kenny saved heroically. McCulloch was sent off in the 74th minute and that added to Wigan’s pressure, but they managed to hold on and win the game in a nice fashion. Sheffield United were relegated with a 19th spot finish on 38 points, while Wigan finished at 17th with 38 points also. Tags: Premiership, Wigan, Sheffield United Posted: |
