Sheff Utd legal action

Following their relegation from the English Premier League and the survival of West Ham, Sheffield United have stepped up talks of legal proceedings. Sheffield United lost out to Wigan on Sunday and with West Ham winning 1-0 at Old Trafford slipped into relegation. The club will now face life in the English Championship for the 2007-2008 season.

5 Premiership teams say that West Ham should have been docked points following the controversy surrounding Carlos Tevez. Wigan, Charlton, Sheff Utd, Middlesbrough and Fulham have all joined in their condemnation of the Premier League’s decision against West Ham which saw a £5.5 million fine levied.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan stated that a meeting would take place today regarding the issue while Sheffield United chairman Kevin McCabe believes more Premiership teams will join in the action now that the relegation battle has been played out. Sheffield United will begin canvassing Premiership clubs for support as they build their legal claim. BBC reportedly claimed that 2 further clubs have already joined the fray but do not wish to be named as yet. All clubs will meet to decide whether or not to press ahead with legal action against the administration. Such action is unprecedented but if many clubs join forces against the Premier League it is hard to see how they can stand against their decision. The key to the action is establishing whether Carlos Tevez was registered in time to play for West Ham or whether he was signed outside of the transfer window.

The legal action is threatened partly out of bitterness from relegation but also due to the failure to make the process transparent by the Premier League. Brenda Spencer who is chief executive of Wigan said that if the Premier League played ball and showed proof then there would be no cause for court action. This saga looks to play on well into the summer break.
