So much for Spain setting the tournament alight. Although they bossed possession for most of the game against Switzerland, the much fancied Spaniards were unusually lethargic and lacked imagination.

There is no need to reach for the panic button just yet, but there are a few things that will leave manager Vicente del Bosque feeling less than comfortable.

 

The defensive partnership of Gerard Piquet and Carles Puyol was exposed and it could ultimately let them down in this World Cup. They normally play in sides, at both club and international level, which are so good going forward it compensates for their defensive frailties.

But the Swiss game proved that if they are tested enough, they are more than likely going to make mistakes. Another worry is the form and fitness of Fernando Torres and Andres Iniesta, who looked well off the pace.

Spain should regain their sharpness and cutting edge to qualify from their group, but it’s now a three-horse race - not a one-horse race as previously expected - for first place.
