Chelsea are understood to be interested in making a move for former Fenerbache and Juventus midfielder Stephen Appiah.

Appiah became a free agent during the summer after Fenerbache allowed the player to leave following his recovery from a serious knee injury. The 27 year old Ghana captain is now fit after recently completing a comeback game for Ghana against Egypt in a World Cup qualifying match.

Throughout the summer there have been constant rumours of a move to Arsenal, West Ham or former club Juventus. However it seems that Chelsea’s interest is now much more concrete. Scolari has been looking for a defensive midfielder since he learned that Michael Essien is unlikely to play again this season.

Appiah is able to sign for any club outside of the transfer window and his availability seems ideal for the Blues.
